Hendrick Terbrugghen, Flute Player, 1621
This painting in a series by Terbrugghen shows a street musician playing his instrument; people would have wanted to buy this painting not for its iconography or subject matter, but simply because it was by Terbrugghen, who had achieved considerable fame at this point in his career. Interestingly enough, Terbrugghen reverses the typical coloration seen in portraits; instead of a light figure on a dark background, the flute player is mostly in shadow on a light-colored background, with incredible use of light to draw attention to the sleeves and the pearl earring hanging from the boy’s ear.
